1. 学习年限:Duration of program

本科生在校的基本学习期限为4年;硕士研究生在校的基本学习期限为2年或3年;博士研究生的基本学习年限为3年。

留学生可以申请提前毕业或延长学习年限。本科生在校学习时间可以延长至6年。研究生的学习期限也可适当延长:硕士研究生在校学习时间不能超过5年,博士研究生不能超过8年。

2. 注册:Registration

在校生每学期应按规定日期到校注册。注册须由本人携带本人护照及学生证完成,不得委托他人。注册前必须先缴清学费,无交费记录者,将不予注册。注册一般是在开学后第一周内完成。

如因故不能按时注册,须提前请假。未请假或请假未获批准而不按时注册者,按旷课论。无故不按时注册超过两周者,按自动退学处理,学校按规定注销其学籍。

3. 课程安排和学分要求:Class units & academic requirements

留学生入学后应尽快了解所修读的项目对学分、课程和培养方案的要求。原则上,留学生毕业要求与中国学生一致。课程类型一般分为必修课和选修课:

必修课,是教学计划规定必须学习的课程,包括公共必修课和专业必修课两类

选修课,是根据教学计划要求和个人兴趣自由选择学习的课程,包括专业选修课、通选课和公共选修课。

本科生的毕业要求:根据教学计划,修满规定的学分和课程,完成毕业论文或毕业设计。总学分要求一般为140-150学分左右,不同的院系学分要求不同,留学生可向各院系教务老师或学业指导老师咨询学分和选课方面的信息。

4. 考勤和请假: Attendance & Disciplines

学校对教学计划规定的课堂讲授、考试、考查和其他教学活动都要进行考勤,学生因故不能出勤,应事先请假。未请假或请假未被批准而不出勤者,均以旷课论。学校将按规定对旷课的学生做出相应的处理。

5. 毕业、结业和学位: Graduation, Completion of Studies, and Degrees

本科生和研究生完成教学计划规定的全部课程,修满规定的总学分并需通过学位论文答辩,准予毕业,发给毕业证书,并根据相关规定授予相应的学士、硕士、博士学位。

本科生、研究生在规定的学习年限内未完成所规定的总学分或未通过论文答辩,只发给结业证书。

本科生、研究生中途退学、学满一年以上并按规定办理了离校手续者,发给肄业证书。

6. 奖学金生年度评审:Annual review for scholarship students

学习时间超过一年的全额奖学金获得者必须参加年度评审,年度评审通过者才能继续获得第二年的奖学金资助。

1. Duration of programs

Doctoral students are limited to a period of 3~8 years though the curriculum is usually 3 years; master’s students 2-5 years though the curriculum is 2-3 years; undergraduates are limited to 4-8 years. Language students are usually required to complete the courses for one semester or above.

Registration

Students must return to school at the beginning of every semester. Only after paying their tuition and registration fee, enrolling at the international students’ office can students receive student status. Undergraduates, graduates, and advanced visiting students must select courses according to their study plan. If students cannot register on time, they can submit a written application to the teaching affairs office of their department as well as the international students’ office. With the permission, they are allowed to delay registering no longer than 15 days. Any student who fails to register and pay the fees on time is regarded as giving up the study voluntarily.

Language students should follow the arrangement of the School of Overseas Education. If a student finds that the arranged level does not fit him/her, he/she may make a request to the Academic Office of the school for a change during the first week of the semester. To change classes in the same level is generally not permitted.

2. Class units & Academic requirements

1Class units

After registering, international students are advised to find out about their programs’ required courses and the total number of units that they must complete in order to graduate. Meanwhile, students should also find out about the sequence in which these classes should be taken. All international students share the same graduation requirements as the native Chinese students.

Types of Courses:

Classes at Soochow University are comprised of two categories: Compulsory Courses and Elective Courses.

Compulsory Courses are the courses that have been determined by the students’ program, which students must complete in order to fulfill their programs’ graduation requirement. The Compulsory Courses includes General Education Courses and the Core Courses of the students’ respective major

Elective Courses are the courses which students are free to choose and enroll according to their personal interests. Keep in mind that you must take an appropriate number of units for your Elective Courses during each academic quarter. The Elective Courses is comprised of the General Elective Courses and the Elective Courses that pertains to the student’s major.

2Academic requirements

Since the degree requirements for completing certain/specific required courses vary from one program to another, students are advised to arrange appointments with a course administrator from their program who can help them with their course selection.

The number of units required for most undergraduate program is 140-150 units. Keep in mind that this varies between different majors. To find out about the number of units required for your area of study, please contact your department.

3. Attendance and Disciplines

Students should follow the disciplines of school. Language students should ask for leave through the students’ affairs office while degree students and advanced visiting students should ask for leave from the supervisor and the teaching affairs office of their departments, and also inform the international students’ office after they get the permission. A sick leave must be attached with hospital reports. A personal leave must be attached with relevant certifications and written forms.

If a degree student has to ask for a sick leave more than a week, he/she has to get the permission from the director of the school and the responsible administration office. If it is longer than one month, he/she is suggested to suspend the study. Language student asks for leave more than 1/3 of the total class hours is not able to take the term test and get a certificate of study.

4. Extending Study Periods

Language students who have completed their period of study and wish to continue studying may apply to extend their period of study. The application may be made during June or December at the students’ affairs office. Students should also at this time pay the tuition and registration for the next period of study and take care of their visa extension and other procedures. Degree students should fill out the application form to extend the period of study; with the permission from the department and the supervisor can they submit the form to international students’ office.

5. Tests and Scores

All international students are required to take part in the assessment prescribed in the teaching plans of the course. A hundred marks system with 60 marks pass is adapted to grade the results of students. The assessment of courses mainly depends on the marks in the mid-term and final exams, with the reference to the general performance and attendance in class.

1Postpone examination

If a degree student cannot take part in the final examination on time with any special reason, he/she can apply in advance. For degree students, they can fill out a form, and then submit it to the teaching affairs office of the department. When the application is permitted by teaching affairs office, international students’ office and the registrar office, he/she can postpone the exam to the beginning of the new semester. The result of the postponed examination is recorded in the accordance on the test paper.

2Restudy

Students who get assessment level lower than D or GPA lower than 1.0, or violating discipline, cheating, being absent from exams and classes unreasonably, are required to retake the course. Those who are unsatisfied with their grades can also choose to retake courses. The results of the retake courses will be recorded according to the highest grade, and will be marked as “Retake” on the transcript.

6. Graduation, Completion of Studies, and Degrees

Undergraduates and graduate students, after completing all the courses stipulated by the education plan and completing all the required credits, completing a defense of their theses are permitted to graduate. They are then given a certificate of graduation, and conferred the appropriate Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree. Each department’s administrator is responsible for information and consultation regarding credits and class selection.

Undergraduates and graduates who have not completed their required credits within the stipulated period of study, or leave school before completing their studies, but have completed at least one year of classes will only be given a certificate of study.

7. Annual Review for Scholarship Students

The scholarships are preferentially awarded to excellent international students for degree studies at Soochow University. The students who have been granted scholarships are requested to participate in annual review, and those passing the annual review are eligible for next-year scholarship support.
